Three Restaurants Earn Two MICHELIN Stars for the First Time

The 2024 Guide brings the number of restaurants awarded two MICHELIN Stars to a total of six establishments, thus doubling the number of establishments in Brazil with this recognition.

Evvai, Sao Paulo

O Evvai it is a microcosm that brings together the chef's entire inner universe Luiz Filipe Souza: reflects his passion for food, life, art, and nature. Therefore, his balanced proposal, presented in a single tasting menu with colorful and flavorful dishes, also reveals a fusion of Brazilian and Italian influences that will win over even the most discerning palates. The dexterity demonstrated in each preparation is proof that we are dealing with a tremendously creative chef with complete mastery of culinary techniques.

Lasai, Rio de Janeiro

A visit to the Lasai, which has only 10 seats, is like watching a play in which the kitchen is the main protagonist. The chef Rafa Costa e Silva constantly interacts with customers through a surprise tasting menu with a modern twist. This menu begins with a variety of appetizers and includes exceptional vegetarian dishes prepared with organic, seasonal ingredients from the restaurant's gardens in Itanhangá and Vale das Videiras.

Tuju, Sao Paulo

In the new Tuju, everything was designed by and for gastronomy! The three-story space was redesigned to enrich the culinary experience: on the ground floor, guests can enjoy appetizers and explore the wine cellar; on the first floor, they discover the restaurant, which features an impressive open kitchen surrounded by tables; on the top floor, they can relax and end the evening with chocolate or a drink at the bar. The chef Ivan Ralston combines seasonal Brazilian products and flavors, especially from São Paulo, with the most contemporary European techniques. Thus, tailored to the climatic conditions of each season, the tasting menu reflects the chef's focus on creativity and research.

In addition to these three new developments that enrich Brazil's selection of two MICHELIN Stars, inspectors were impressed by the continued consistency in offering exceptional experiences from SUN (São Paulo), Gold (Rio de Janeiro) and Oteque (Rio de Janeiro). They all kept their two MICHELIN Stars.

Seven New Restaurants Receive a MICHELIN Star

The MICHELIN Guide 2024 introduces seven new one-star restaurants: six in São Paulo and one in Rio de Janeiro. This brings the total number of restaurants awarded one MICHELIN Star to fifteen. The seven new restaurants are:

Fame Osteria, Sao Paulo

This modest and discreet restaurant, run by the chef Marco Renzetti, has a fascinating history: it began as an illegal bar before quickly becoming a pilgrimage site for food lovers. Thus, the tasting menu draws on classic Italian cuisine, with wonderful homemade pastas (capeletti, cannelloni, tonnarelli, etc.) and memorable risottos. It also offers dishes in which grilled meat plays a decisive role.

Kazuo, Sao Paulo

The chef Kazuo Harada takes diners on a culinary journey that takes them to Japan, China, Malaysia, Thailand, Korea, and even India. One of the things that sets it apart from other Asian restaurants in the city is the chef's ability to weave a thread through the unique attributes of Pan-Asian cuisine. The menu also features a wide variety of sushi, sashimi, nigiri, maki, and temaki. They also offer an omakase menu at the gastronomic counter.

Kuro, Sao Paulo

In this Japanese restaurant, the chef Henry Miyamo advocates an exclusive omakase menu, served at the counter surrounding the kitchen. In other words, the protagonists here are the grilled sushi and the fire: they work with extremely pure Japanese charcoal, known as binchotan. As a result, it gives the dishes a very special flavor.

Murakami, Sao Paulo

The extroverted chef Tsuyoshi Murakami, who runs the restaurant of the same name, takes diners on a gastronomic journey through two menus: "Sushi Experience," which he creates himself; and "Murakami Experience," which features a delicious mix of starters, sushi, sashimi, tempura, and a wagyu main course. For dessert, delicate mochi prepared by the chef's son provides the perfect end to the meal.

Oizumi Sushi, Sao Paulo

By naming your restaurant after Oizumi Sushi, the chef Danilo Maciel wanted to pay homage to the Japanese city with the largest concentration of Brazilian immigrants. Therefore, it offers a unique 16-course omakase menu, meticulously prepared with fresh fish of the day and other delicacies that the chef matures on-site to ensure maximum flavor.

San Omakase Room, Rio de Janeiro

In this intimate restaurant, located in the elegant Leblon neighborhood, the chef André Nobuyuki Kawai aims to bring Japanese hospitality to the forefront, so that, beyond the gastronomic concepts associated with an omakase menu, customers can discover the unique aspects of Japanese culture through service. The variety of sauces served with their nigiri are surprising!

Tangará Jean-Georges, São Paulo

Located in the luxurious hotel Tangará Palace, Tangará Jean-Georges is run by the prestigious French chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten and managed by resident chefs Filipe Rizzato It is Neusi Machado. In other words, it offers international cuisine with contemporary dishes that emphasize delicacy and purity of flavors. Thus, the à la carte menu, with specific sections dedicated to caviar, raw dishes, and vegetarian and vegan options, is complemented by two tasting menus.

MICHELIN Green Star Debuts in Brazil

While the famous Stars in the MICHELIN Guide selection indicate restaurants that offer wonderful gastronomic experiences, the MICHELIN Green Star, launched in 2020, honors establishments that combine culinary excellence with exceptional ecological commitments. These establishments are a source of inspiration for both gourmets and the entire gastronomy industry. For the first time, three Brazilian restaurants located in São Paulo received the MICHELIN Green Star:

The Pig House

The restaurant controls the food chain of its products from the field to the consumer and raises its own Brazilian breed pigs (Sorocaba, Plau, Canastra, Caruncho and Pereira) using sustainable techniques.

Corrutela

This establishment works with ecological products from local suppliers, with fish and meat of sustainable origin, as well as flour produced in its own mill.

Tuju

In addition to recycling, reusing rainwater, composting, and using seasonal produce from small suppliers, especially from the state of São Paulo, the restaurant has created a research center that aims to find and give visibility to producers who work in a fair, ethical, and sustainable manner.

Twelve New Restaurants with Bib Gourmand, Recognition of Quality Cuisine at a Good Price

In the MICHELIN Guide selection, the Bib Gourmand awards restaurants for excellent value for money. Frequently considered the best recommendations by MICHELIN Guide inspectors, Bib Gourmand establishments are particularly appreciated by gourmets seeking meals at a fair price that don't compromise on the quality of the products and cuisine.

This year's 12 new restaurants bring the total number of Bib Gourmand restaurants in Brazil to 37. Among the new award-winning establishments, two are located in Rio de Janeiro— Brota It is Sult — while everyone else is in São Paulo: The Baianeira – MASP, Lemongrass, Cora, Gourd, Fair, Kotori, Mocotó Vila Leopoldina, Name, Più Higienópolis It is Shihoma Fresh Pasta.

38 Establishments Are Included in the Brazilian Selection as Recommended

In addition to the establishments awarded the legendary Stars or Bib Gourmand, the MICHELIN Guide 2024 also recommends numerous restaurants whose quality cuisine has won over the inspectors. Thus, this year, 38 restaurants were added to the selection, joining the 44 establishments that MICHELIN inspectors continue to recommend. Specifically, of these 38 new additions, 15 are located in Rio de Janeiro and 23 in São Paulo.

Among them, there are numerous restaurants that exalt traditional Brazilian cuisine (such as Rios House, Monday, Jiquitaia, NOTIÊ or Ruda), but above all, there is a wide variety of culinary options that take us to other countries, with several options of Japanese cuisine (such as Haru Sushi, KANOE, Kubo Zushi or Maza), Italian (Borgo Mooca, Lassù, Paparoto Cucina or Simone Restaurant), Portuguese (Henrietta), Spanish (Izär), French (The Presidents, Chez Claude São Paulo or Blaise), Mexican (Metzi), Peruvian (Ama.zo – Higienópolis Patio), Korean (Bicol Korean Cuisine) and even Taiwanese (Aio).

Two MICHELIN Special Awards

The MICHELIN Guide, in addition to recommending quality restaurants, honors talented professionals and exceptional teams that particularly impress the inspectors. Thus, two MICHELIN Special Awards were presented at the 2024 ceremony.

MICHELIN Sommelier Award: Maíra Freire, from the two-star Lasai restaurant in Rio de Janeiro

At Lasai restaurant, Maíra Freire manages the wine cellar. She received the MICHELIN Sommelier Award in recognition of her work and dedication. In her daily work, she interacts with customers and explains the characteristics of the wines, many of which are natural and biodynamic, in an educational manner, as well as all the details she considers when selecting them.
