Digital Nomads: Floripa is their favorite destination and they settle here

Published on December 7, 2023 by

Florianópolis, our magical island in the south of Brazil, has increasingly won the hearts of digital nomads. Offering a paradisiacal home to combine remote work and quality of life. In other words, with its beaches, cosmopolitan spirit and a much lower cost of living compared to foreign cities, Floripa has become one of the most coveted destinations for these global workers. Over the years, they have chosen to invest and establish housing.

The Digital Nomadism movement on the rise

The digital nomadism movement has gained momentum over the past decade, solidifying itself as a viable lifestyle option for remote workers. Currently, it is estimated that there are 35 million digital nomads around the world. And the forecast is that this number will reach 1 billion until 2035, according to data from immigration consultancy Fragomen.

The specialized portal Nomadlist highlights that, in Latin America, destinations such as Mexico City, Buenos Aires and Medellín are at the top of the most targeted. However, Florianópolis stands out, offering not only an environment conducive to remote work, but also luxury accommodation. With much more affordable prices compared to other global destinations.

The jewel in the crown: Luxury properties and lots of comfort

Real estate consultants attest that, in Brazil, digital nomads find housing options that combine luxury and comfort, perfect for working from home. In other words, the range of high-quality properties, from sophisticated apartments to penthouses with outdoor areas, pools, and privacy, meets the diverse needs of these global professionals.

Two years ago, in September 2021, the National Immigration Council, of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, created a specific visa for digital nomads. The regulation, implemented in January last year, aims to attract qualified labor and investments to Brazil. The residence permit allows stays of up to one year, extendable for another year, for foreigners who prove remote activity and a salary of at least US$ 1.5 thousand per month or reservations from US$ 18 thousand.

Since the beginning of this migration policy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued 649 visas to digital nomads. Among the most present nationalities are Americans, Germans, English, French and Swiss. Last year saw almost one visa of this type approved per day.

The diversity of digital nomads in Florianópolis

Florianópolis became a melting pot for digital nomads of all ages, but the predominant age range is 20 to 49. Whether you're looking for an apartment for a solo or couple, wanting plenty of amenities within walking distance, or for families with children, who often seek spacious penthouses, the island offers diverse options to suit different lifestyles.

The charm of Floripa winning over digital nomads

When exploring natural beauty, remote professionals find welcoming coworking spaces where productivity merges with the sea breeze. This unique fusion between the work environment and exuberant nature makes Floripa a true paradise for those who decide to settle down and invest in real estate.

The Brazilian sun and heat attracting global workers

While Lisbon, in Portugal, is the most popular destination for many digital nomads, Florianópolis stands out as a tropical paradise for those looking for everything good. With around 15 thousand foreigners living in the Portuguese capital, it is undeniable that Lisbon is an attractive spot. However, when harsh winter weather hits Europe and places like New York, many digital nomads choose to migrate to Brazil, where the sun shines for six months of the year.

The option of enrolling children in bilingual schools and offering a unique cultural richness is a differentiator for those seeking not only a workplace but also an enriching life experience. Families often seek penthouses with outdoor areas, pools, and privacy, creating a perfect balance between work and leisure.

Florianópolis is becoming the permanent home for Digital Nomads

Finally, Florianópolis, with its enchanting beaches, luxury properties and welcoming atmosphere, has established itself as a perfect refuge for digital nomads. Who come in search of a unique combination between work and quality of life. As well, the increasingly favorable Brazilian migration policy, combined with the diversity of housing options, make the Florianopolitan island a dream destination for global professionals. And they arrive in search of the requirements to live the best in life.
